Elk Grove is not just a great place to live, it’s also becoming a distinct destination.
People within and outside the city limits already enjoy a growing list of popular restaurants, entertainment, shopping and wonderful places for a hefty dose of fresh air and outdoor recreation. The presence of parks and outdoor trails is growing right along with the city’s population.
Along with a proposed city zoo, here’s another big-ticket item Elk Grove residents and visitors can celebrate: A 54,000-square-foot community recreation center named CORE.
CORE will be home to a modern center for fitness, sports leagues, tournaments and other events. The name CORE is derived from the first two letters of each word in “Consumnes Recreation.”
City leaders hope the center will be at the core of the community, as a gathering spot for all things involving wellness, health and movement.
In the works since 2019, Elk Grove and the Cosumnes Community Services District are moving fast, awarding a construction contract in March for the new facility at the 30-acre Morse Community Park along Bellaterra Drive. The project will break ground in May and the grand opening is scheduled sometime after the middle of 2024.
Visitors of Morse Community Park frequent the park’s adult fitness structures, basketball court, climbing rocks, dog park, bike trail access and more.
CORE will build on the diversity of outdoor activity options the city already offers. The CORE program promises two large gyms, aerobic multipurpose rooms, plenty of gym space, indoor jogging track and other amenities for people who like to get their blood pumping to the beat of sport, competition and fitness.
The two-story community facility will host a recreation program for people at individual and group levels.
Visitors will notice unique architecture and design, which focuses on tapestry and energy. Tapestry signifies a diverse community coming together and becoming greater in their sum. When the center opens, keep an eye out for this idea of weaving and overlap in the building’s design. The architecture firm also hopes to create an immediate sense of energy throughout the building upon setting foot inside.
